New Lifeguard Certification Courses

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. This program offers a choice of Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED courses to meet the various training needs of a diverse audience.


Candidates must:

1. Be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.

2. Swim 300 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.

3. Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.

4. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Swim goggles are not allowed.
  • Surface dive, feet-first or headfirst, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath
  • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Lifeguard Recertification Courses

The following courses are for those who are CURRENTLY CERTIFIED AS A LIFEGUARD, and need to renew their certifications. You must present proof of prior certification, and your certifications must be current. Participants must bring their own CPR rescue mask to the training session. Training consists of Physical Rescue Skills and 2 Written Tests, along with a brief review session. The lifeguard training re-certification course includes CPR Pro/ AED for Lifeguards and Standard First Aid for Lifeguards. Modules cannot be issued independently and are integrated into the ARC Lifeguard Training program – WE CANNOT recertify CPR/ AED for Lifeguards without doing all modules - Lifeguarding/ First Aid/ CPR/ AED. It is STRONGLY advised that participants read the participants manual prior to class. Participants who have difficulty with the information will be directed to take a full Lifeguard course. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Course

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor course purpose is to train instructor candidates to teach basic-level Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer courses and additional modules. Instructor candidates must be at least 17 years old and possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification. This course is focused on training candidates to deliver information and successfully manage teaching classes. Candidates are expected to have high level knowledge of Lifeguarding program content and skills prior to enrolling in this course. This course costs $400 and successful completion will certify candidates as an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor for a 2 year period.

Lifeguard Instructor/Trainer Review Courses

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor/Instructor Trainer Review Course is designed for CURRENT ARC Lifeguard Instructors/Instructor Trainers to review administrative procedures as well as participate in a Skill Polish session to ensure consistency of course delivery when teaching American Red Cross courses. This class is a required part of maintaining instructor certification in good standing with the American Red Cross and must be completed every 2 years. Proof of Current Certification is required for enrollment.

CPR/AED/First Aid Certification Courses

The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program helps participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The courses in this program teach the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed.

NC Pool Employee Courses & Trainings

NC Pool Operator: 1 Day Course

This course is required for all AquaTech Pool Management Pool Managers and Assistant Managers, as well as service technicians.  This certification is good for 5 years, and is free for AquaTech employees, and $150 for all others.
