Lifeguard

The primary duty and responsibility of the lifeguard is to supervise pool patrons while they are in the water to ensure their safety at all times. The secondary duties of the lifeguard include checking and balancing chemicals, enforcing pool facility rules, completing daily report forms, vacuuming and cleaning the facility, which includes cleaning the bathrooms, and interacting with the pool patrons in a polite and respectful manner. All lifeguards must have current American Red Cross certification in lifeguarding, CPR and first aid.

Pool Manager

A pool manager is responsible for running the daily operations of a pool facility. The primary responsibility of a pool manager is supervising the safety of the pool patrons. In addition to the primary responsibility, the duties of the manager include: supervising and training lifeguards, scheduling lifeguards, checking and balancing chemicals, ensuring pool equipment is in good repair, enforcing pool facility rules, completing daily report forms, organizing pool events, supervising swim lessons, and creating an overall safe and enjoyable environment for the pool patrons. All managers must have a current American Red Cross certification in lifeguarding, CPR and first aid. All managers must complete a pool operator’s certification course.

Pool Attendant

A pool attendant’s responsibility is to maintain a safe environment at the pool facility. They will ensure that the restrooms and the entire pool facility are clean and orderly, and they will check tags of patrons using the facility. A pool attendant must have current American Red Cross certification in CPR and first aid. In addition, a pool attendant manager must complete a pool operator’s certification course.

Pool Service Specialist

A pool service specialist’s primary duty is to clean and attend to pools that are not staffed with lifeguards or pool attendants. They clean the pool, restrooms and the entire pool facility. In addition to cleaning, their duties include: checking and balancing chemicals, vacuuming and cleaning the pool, completing daily duties reports, ensuring pool equipment is in good repair, and performing minor pool repairs. This is not an American Red Cross-certified position. A pool service specialist must complete a pool operator’s certification class.
